Re: Level of Detail?

Gary-

No idea why NATO is so different, but there are other differences, too.
Not to bait, or anything like that, but NATO didn't win the Gulf War. We
did. Maybe they should be like us more often.

Really, it comes down to the mindset of the different cultures. A platoon
leader, cut off from other friendly units, is equipped to "call in the
world!" if need be. If there's another way, I don't know it.

I do know that our system isn't that hard for an eighteen year-old just
out of high school to use. Most of our systems are geared for that
particular user. It just takes training, and lots of it, and we win. No-one
in the world can truthfully say that thier Army maintains higher training
standards than ours. Posture all they like, but we're better trained. How
else could we have a Cavalry Troop (25 or so Bradleys & Abrahms) take on and
BEAT two successive Heavy Armored brigades of the best that the fourth
largest army in the world could field. And don't start about airpower, it
was no-fly conditions.

BTW, that engagement lasted about two hours. The Cav had been moving for
over thirty without a rest, and the two brigades (each of 128 tanks alone!)
were in laager positions and were rested. Two different Bird Colonels
defeated by a Captain.

And in practice, using this system isn't all that difficult. Just like
every good character, all soldiers are supposed to carry pen and paper at all
times. Aid to memory, jotting down important stuff, etc.

As to "Sunray", I have no idea. NATO & US are not the same. There is
some concern in US General Officers' circles that some NATO countries aren't
trustworthy enough to share everything. In the face of just some of the
orientations of certain governments, I'd agree. If we're gonna save Europe's
butt from the Warsaw Pact, then it'll be done our way. That may be arrogant,
but it's our sons & daughters trying to cross AKULA-infested waters just to
put themselves in harm's way in Germeny.
