There seems to be an error in this position. The wild mustang herds of
the American Southwest, and the wild Thoroughbred herds of Australia, do
just fine on ther own. Other than hunting by Man, they have few natural
preadators. If they can thrive in our great southwest "desert", they can
thrive in the more temperate regions. So sayeth my farm-raised fiancee,
who is a horse person.
Cows also should thrive in the plains, as they would fill the same niche
as buffalo. Many western ranches raise rather tough strains and sturdy
hybrids for various purposes. They will migrate to find better climates,
if necessary. Also, count on the surviving buffalo to thrive. Wild donkeys
are currently a pest species in many places, and will provide another
farm-useful critter. Domestic pigs quickly go feral, and will also survive.
Do keep in mind that much of the "nuclear winter" information was
published by people who wanted to scare the hell out of the rest of us, in
hopes of averting war. Some of it was targeted at encouraging unilateral
disarmnament. Like any good political "information", it takes the extreme
case. Similar extremes exist in Regan's SDI. It could become effective,
but not enogh to shield all of us, or even most, against a massive attack.
What it does is shield effectively against a small scale attack by missile
armed cheap shot artists. Thats why we need it NOW, before we have to
decide whether to trade Los Angeles for tribute to some Pariah like Kim
Jong Il of the DPRK.
This scenario is a good "match" to light the confligration for post Soviet
war campaigns.
