Yawn. I say again, yawn. This latest round of hype and tripe is due to
Militech trying to push their lubricants and the army turning them
down. They found several people who would support their statements and
leaked it to ABC news earlier this week.

The current front runner to supplement the M-16 series is the XM-8, which
exists in a non-firing display unit only at this time. It's the rifle
component of the living abortion known as either the OICW or XM-29. The
only reason it's being considered is because the OICW program, faults and
all, has been split into three parts of the development staff want at least
something to hit the field. The GL portion has a string of failures,
including in barrel detonations, and the optics and firecontrol part
suffers from weight, power, and reliability issues. The only part that
consistently works was the rifle and even that's been completely redesigned
for the XM-8.

The bottom line is that if the troops who complained, mostly REMF and
maintenance units, had followed the specs on how to lube the weapon for the
environment, this would be a non-issue. Once again we throw tons of money
at a hardware solution when the software is at fault. Another instance of
failure of leadership in making sure the troops we both trained properly
and following proper procedures.
