A map overlay doesn't have to be a picture sent over the tactical net. The
software on the computer just has to break down the over lay into a series
of numbers (very simple for a computer). This series of numbers is for a
pre-defined overlay set that is chosen from a series already on the
computer
(since all other computers on the tactical net will have these overlays
pre-installed no need to transmit this information).
It needs to find the variable information, like its location on the map,
locations of any spotted units, etc, etc.. It compresses this data down,
encapsulates this data for a high speed data burst and sends this stream of
numbers on its way. Very easy for a 9600 baud modem with a radio with burst
transmission capabilities (AN/PRC-70 radio set has this). I think you'd be
surprised how much information can be transmitted this way, in a very short
period of time.
I've over simpleified the procedure, but this gives you the jist of what
can
happen.
