[mp-gg] Re: Interesting Site
On the other hand, the Navy used to think that an airplain would never sink
a battleship. They treated the "aeroplane cranks" rather harshly, as I
recall.
Crank? Probably. Ideas worth considering? Hmm.
I was a Mech Infantryman when you could still be an 11B in a Bradley, and I
thought a mountain bike would be a fine way for people to move quickly and
quietly from unit to unit. Drafted into HQ as the battalion mailclerk, I was
working on getting permission to take one to the field, to use running the
mail. The Adjutant and the CO thought it was a great idea, but they thought
it best to "work the system" and someone always seemed to be "studying" the
request. Peace-time it was a great idea. Wartime, perhaps. I could see and
hear better on a bike, and two bikes can support each other better than two
guys in a jeep.
I used a "street" 10-speed in garrison. Worked great, and freed me from
jeeps and the base "taxi" service (always late).
Going back to M-113s is dumb. Going to an airmoble IFV is not. How about an
overseas-deployable division organized around the Mech/Heavy model,
deploying to prepositioned stocks of Bradleys, Abrams, etc. In the event
they have to go elsewhere, the availability of air-transportable IFVs and
light tanks means they fight as a medium Mech Infantry division, with real
artillery and anti-armor capability, not light infantry "speed bumps".
All genius is "crank" until it works. The trick is sorting them out.
(and not strangling them when the annoy the crap out of everyone)
